Body Armor:

Is body armor legal in my state?

There are no federal laws prohibiting the purchase or possession of general body armor by law-abiding citizens of the USA over the age of 18.

While legal in all 50 states to purchase and own body armor if you are not a convicted felon, Connecticut and New York have additional restrictions on purchase and ownership of body armor.

In Connecticut, all transactions must be in person unless you meet any of the following requirements:

  • You are a sworn member or authorized official of an organized local police department,
  • You are a member of the Connecticut State Police, the Division of Criminal Justice, the Department of Correction, the Board of Pardons and Paroles or the Department of Motor Vehicles,
  • You are an authorized official of a municipality or the Department of Administrative Services that purchases body armor on behalf of police,
  • You are an official of the Judicial Branch who purchases body armor on behalf of a probation officer or a judicial marshal, or
  • You are a member of the National Guard or armed forces reserve.

If you do not meet one of these requirements, it is a class B misdemeanor to purchase body armor without meeting the seller face to face. It is also illegal to own body armor if you are a convicted felon. Failing to keep this ordinance is punishable by imprisonment, a fine, or both.

The law was updated in December 2023 and its full context can be read here:  https://www.cga.ct.gov/2023/rpt/pdf/2023-R-0301.pdf

If you are located in Connecticut, meet one of the requirements listed above, and would like to purchase body armor from WarBird, please contact our customer service department at (231) 922-5000 or contact our support team.

In New York, only those engaged or employed in an “eligible profession,” as defined by New York’s Department of State, are eligible to purchase or own body armor. Such purchases are required to take place in person.  For a list of professions currently deemed eligible, see New York State Penal Law Section 270.21

At this time WarBird does not sell in the State of New York.

Can I fly with body armor?

It is recommended that you check the most recent TSA regulations as the restrictions are constantly changing. As of this writing, the TSA website states that body armor is allowed in both checked and carried luggage with the caveat that "our officers make the final decision on whether an item is allowed at the checkpoint."

What is a trauma plate and how does it complement or enhance my soft body armor?

A trauma plate, also known as a trauma pad or trauma insert, is an additional plate added to the strike face side of body armor. Its purpose is to further absorb and distribute the impact energy, reducing the risk of blunt force trauma and enhancing overall protection over the chest cavity. For example, when used in conjunction with (ICW) Level II armor, our Side Kick trauma plate increases ballistic protection to Level IIIA and provides added trauma protection.

Do I need trauma plates with my soft body armor?

While trauma plates are optional, they provide additional protection by minimizing the impact energy transferred to the wearer over the chest cavity. Trauma plates are especially recommended for those who seek added protection against blunt force trauma, increasing the overall effectiveness of the body armor system.

Are trauma plates compatible with all soft body armor vests?

WarBird’s trauma plates are designed to be compatible with all of WarBird’s soft body armor vests.

What material are trauma plates made from?

Our trauma plates are made with 100% woven Aramid construction and foam encapsulated in a PU-coated polyester cover.  These materials are chosen for their ability to dissipate and absorb energy, providing additional protection against blunt force trauma associated with ballistic impacts.

How do I properly install and position trauma plates in my body armor?

Installation instructions for trauma plates may vary depending on your carrier or vest. Generally, trauma plates are inserted into specially designed pockets on the inner side of the body armor. Follow the guidelines provided in your carrier or vest with purchase or refer to the specific user manual for proper installation and positioning.  For additional support feel free to contact our customer service department here or by calling (231) 922-5000.

Do trauma plates have a lifespan and how often should they be replaced?

The lifespan of trauma plates depends on factors such as usage and exposure to environmental conditions. Regularly inspect your trauma plates for signs of wear or damage, and replace them if any compromise is detected. While there is no set expiration date, routine checks are advisable.

Are trauma plates heavy or bulky?

Advancements in materials and design have allowed our trauma plates to be lightweight and slim, while providing additional protection for comfort and mobility.

Ear Protection:

What is electronic hearing protection?

Sound-canceling hearing protection products are innovative devices designed to reduce or cancel out harmful noises, while still allowing you to hear essential sounds like speech or ambient noise. They utilize advanced technology to provide a comfortable and effective solution for protecting your hearing in noisy environments.

How does electronic hearing protection work?

These products typically use a combination of active sound suppression technology and passive noise isolation to block out unwanted sounds. Active sound suppression works by using microphones to pick up ambient noise and then producing sound waves that are the exact opposite, effectively canceling out the noise. Passive noise isolation involves physical barriers such as ear cups and earmuff housing to block external noise.

What are the benefits of using electronic hearing protection over passive protection devices?

  • Protection: They help protect your hearing from loud noises that could cause damage or discomfort.
  • Comfort: Our products are designed to be lightweight and comfortable for extended wear.
  • Rechargeable: Rechargeable models allow you to conveniently power them up without the need for disposable batteries and quickly/easily recharge them as needed
  • Versatility: They can be used in various environments, including shooting ranges, construction sites, concerts, workshops, and more.
  • Communication: Products allow for clear communication while still providing protection from loud noises.

Who can benefit from using rechargeable electronic hearing protection?

Anyone exposed to loud noises on a regular basis can benefit from using rechargeable Intrepid RC and Intrepid BT hearing protection. This includes shooters, hunters, workers in industrial settings, musicians, concert-goers and individuals with sensitivity to noise. USB charging removes the need to purchase traditional alkaline batteries, however, in certain field applications where occasional recharging is not possible, the WarBird Intrepid model uses replaceable alkaline batteries.

How do I know which WarBird hearing protection model is right for me?

Choosing the right product depends on your specific needs, budget and preferences. Factors to consider include the level of noise reduction required, comfort, battery life, size, and additional features such as Bluetooth connectivity or adjustable settings. We recommend exploring our range of Intrepid products to find the best match for your requirements. All have high decibel reduction ratings, fit most heads/ears and are comfortable for long periods of wear.

Can electronic hearing protection replace traditional ear plugs or muffs?

Electronic hearing protection products offer advanced features and benefits, however they may not completely replace traditional earplugs or earmuffs in all situations. It's essential to assess the noise levels in your environment and choose the appropriate hearing protection accordingly.

How do I care for and maintain my electronic hearing protection?

To ensure optimal performance and longevity, we recommend following the User Manual packaged with your Intrepid electronic hearing protection for proper care and maintenance. A copy of the User Manual can be downloaded on the specific Intrepid model product page on this site: warbirdpro.com.

Proper care includes cleaning the ear cushions regularly, storing the products in a clean and dry environment, and avoiding exposure to extreme temperatures or moisture. Additionally, be sure to recharge the batteries or replace the batteries as needed to maintain uninterrupted use.

Does WarBird electronic ear protection come with a warranty?

WarBird hearing protection products come with a manufacturer's warranty of One Year, which covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for the specified period.  https://warbirdpro.com/pages/warranty-policies

What is electronic hearing protection with Bluetooth?

Our Intrepid BT electronic hearing protection combines the benefits of hearing protection with the convenience of wireless connectivity. This product not only offers sound protection (amplification/suppression), but also allows you to stream audio from Bluetooth-enabled devices such as smartphones, tablets, or music players. This integration provides an enhanced listening experience while still protecting your hearing in noisy environments. Three selectable modes include 1) Bluetooth & Hearing Protection; 2) Bluetooth Only; 3) Sound Protection Only (amplification/suppression).

Are there any compatibility requirements for using  Bluetooth-enabled hearing protection products?

Intrepid BT is designed to be compatible with a wide range of Bluetooth-enabled devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and MP3 players.

Can I use Bluetooth for phone calls with the Intrepid BT?

Yes. Intrepid BT with Bluetooth functionality allows you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly. The integrated microphone and controls enable hands-free calling, providing convenience and clarity even in noisy environments.

How do I maintain Bluetooth connectivity with my Intrepid BT?

To maintain Bluetooth connectivity, ensure that your device and hearing protection are within the typical recommended range for Bluetooth transmission (normally around 30 feet/10 meters). Additionally, keep your device's Bluetooth software up-to-date and avoid interference from other electronic devices or obstacles that may disrupt the signal.

Will these work with my hearing aids? Will I need to turn my hearing aids down to avoid squealing or feedback?

It depends on the type of hearing aid, Behind the Ear (BTE) or In the Canal (ITC), the quality of the individual’s hearing and the shape/size of the ear.

For most people the answer is yes, they do work for hearing-impaired individuals when used in conjunction with hearing aids. Intrepid ear protectors amplify to a level that should be sufficient for most hearing-impaired individuals to hear.  That said, the Intrepid are not tuned to the hearing profile of a hearing aid, but are usually sufficient to be intelligible.

The squealing you mentioned comes from a feedback loop caused either by physical contact against the microphone of the hearing aid and the hearing protector (usually the foam inside the cup) or a gap between the ear seal and skull caused by the BTE hearing aid.  This is not an issue with ITC hearing aids.  If the hearing protector has sufficient offset between the foam and the hearing aid mic, no feedback loop.

 Protective Eyewear:

What is 4SHADOW Lens Technology?

4SHADOW™ is built upon four pillars that protect your vision and redefine the way you see and interact with the world around you.

  • Impact resistance for unbreakable confidence that stands firm
  • Polarized to cut through the glare and provide unwavering clarity*
  • High resolution creates razor sharp vision and brings every pixel to life.
  • 99.99% UV protection offers an impregnable defense that shields your eyes.

*Polarization is not available on photochromic lenses.

What do polarized lenses do?

All WarBird glasses (except Photochromic lens models) feature polarized lenses to reduce glare and improve contrast by filtering out reflection of horizontal light waves. Our state-of-the-art 4SHADOW lenses use light-absorbing molecules aligned horizontally that inhibit horizontal light waves while allowing vertical light waves to pass through. This reduces glare and improves contrast, making it easier to see objects and details.

  • Reduce glare, which is caused by light reflecting off of smooth surfaces, such as water, snow, and roads.
  • Improve contrast, which is the ability to distinguish between light and dark areas. This can make it easier to see objects and details, especially in bright conditions.
  • Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.
  • Reduce squinting, which can cause eye strain and headaches.
  • Improve depth perception, which is the ability to judge how far away objects are.
  • Reduce eye fatigue, especially after prolonged periods of time spent in bright conditions.
  • Especially beneficial for people who spend a lot of time outdoors, such as athletes, drivers, and boaters.
  • Made with a special film that contains long, thin molecules aligned in a horizontal direction. These molecules absorb horizontal light but allow vertical light waves to pass through.

Are prescription lenses available for WarBird protective eyewear?

This is something we are working on but unfortunately, they are not available at this time.

What is VLT?

VLT, or Visible Light Transmission, is the percentage of visible light that passes through your lenses. Lenses with lower VLT percentages will be darker and block more light, while those with higher VLT percentages will be lighter and let more light through.

Certain WarBird lenses say they are High-Contrast.  What does that mean?

WarBird High-Contrast lenses are designed to help objects stand out from their environment. This sharper depth-of-field effect is useful in low-light conditions where shadows typically obscure edges. With clearer definition you can experience less eye and mental fatigue identifying objects in the world around you.

  • Improved visibility in low light conditions.
  • Reduced eye strain: makes it easier to focus on objects. Good for reading, working on a computer, or driving.
  • Improved depth perception: easy to distinguish between objects that are close together and objects that are further away. Great for sports such as shooting, baseball, golf, or tennis.
  • Improved overall vision: objects appear sharper and more defined. Great for people with nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
  • In addition to these general benefits, high-contrast lenses can also be helpful for people with specific eye conditions, such as Macular degeneration, Diabetic retinopathy, and Glaucoma.

Are lost or stolen glasses covered in any way?

It happens to all of us. We sincerely empathize, but there’s nothing we can do about lost or stolen eyewear.

What’s the best way to prevent my lenses from getting scratched.

Following WarBird’s instructions on proper cleaning will ensure clear vision and prolong their lifespan. Always transport your eyewear in a WarBird semi-rigid case to prevent damage. Storing in the microfiber bag can help keep them dust free when not in use. Proper storage of your eyewear is essential to preventing scratches. Avoid putting your eyewear where they might be likely to fall and hit the ground. These places include on the top of your head, on your dashboard, hanging from your shirt collar, etc.

Can I use window cleaner on my eyewear?

Please don’t. Most window cleaners typically contain harsh chemicals (e.g. ammonia, etc.) that can damage the coatings on your lenses.

How many times can I wash my anti-fog treated lenses before the treatment is ineffective?

If your lenses have an anti-fog treatment, we recommend removing dust and debris by blowing on them or rinsing them gently. If the lenses are very dirty or oily, then using a mild dish soap is ok, but try to avoid it when possible. Current anti-fog treatment technology is washable, but the more you wash them the less effective the treatment will become. The number of washes they can endure is dependent on the washing technique, but on average, the anti-fog treatment should hold up to about 50 washes.
